The Solar Aesthetic and Property Prices

A common, albeit outdated, concern reading solar systems is the PV panels aesthetic. Unsightly blue and white panels are now fossils of the past with clever architects and designers combining to create modern, sleek, minimalist panels.

Modern, low profile, even design enhancing?

With property prices continuing sunwards, we thought we’d look at data around whether solar systems add, detract, or have any impact on value.

Studies tend to be somewhat subjective; it is difficult to isolate, “would you pay more for this house, all things being equal, with or without a solar system?”. However, it is clear solar systems are considered an improvement (e.g. a pool, new kitchen) and consequently add value to homes.

A report conducted by the UK government a few years ago found that solar PV raised home values by up to 38%. Our neighbours across the ditch Australia show similar findings; 85% of Australians agreed that solar panel installations add value to a home.

How do solar panels add value to your property?

A solar system is an improvement that is the most likely to add value over many other costs.

Why? Simply, because every home uses electricity and if the cost of using electricity is reduced then potential purchasers shall consider your property favourably.

Australian research has found that the more solar panels there are on a roof, the higher the value of the home becomes, with an estimated increase of the value of approximately $6000 per kilowatt of solar energy. This indicates a potential increase in retail value of over $29,000 for a property with a 5KW solar system installed!
